How To-14: "How to Become Enlightened"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

To become enlightened, all one needs to do is be continually conscious. The practice of prolonging our conscious state (into the dream state, as well) will not give us the power to control the material world. It will, however, give us the power to be absolutely free from the material world. Being enlightened is not a special state of mind; it is our original nature, our natural awareness of "things" without a notion of separateness of identity from the world around us. In short, the state of mind we were in before the universe came to be. This is not as difficult as one might think. You take yourself with you wherever you go. If you can't find it where you are right now, where do you expect to wander in search of it?
Many people feel that they must suffer in order to gain liberation. This doesn't have to be the case. We all belong in the universe, the universe doesn't care if we suffer or not. We are our own key to absolute freedom. And there are as many paths to perfect enlightenment as there are beings in the universe. When we become conscious we expand, when we turn away from being conscious we contract. Beyond this, reality will always prove to us that we cannot move against its own self governing laws. All of us are free to choose the kind of "Reality" we wish to know, none of us can break the rules. Every entity in creation has the same freedom of choice.
There are some of us who have preached the dogmatic certainty of one particular path. But in the end enlightenment is there and how you achieve it isn't as important as getting there.
Obviously there's no step-by-step "How to" that points to the correct path for everyone, all of the time. External events aren't as important as how you react to them. Some have said, "This reality is an illusion." Unfortunately, it can be a painful illusion and for the one who feels the pain, that pain is very real and the idea of an illusion seems very far fetched.
The more you Love, the more there will be to Love. The more you fear, the more there will be to fear. This is basically "Expansion" and "Contraction". To find enlightenment we need only expand. Each of us has complete freedom to choose, you already know this.
Cosmic consciousness is real, as real as we are. Whatever we've done in retracting from Cosmic consciousness, (the One source of All that Is, or whatever words you wish to use,) we are doing now. We all come from the same place, we are all going back to the same place.
What I hope you'll find here are some simple attitudes that will assist you on your way.

Steps

  1. Know that there is nothing you must "accomplish" first in order to find enlightenment. All potential experiences are already within you. Perhaps the state of mind that most needs enlightenment is that of seeing fellow human beings as needing to be guided or enlightened or perhaps that of seeing human beings as sinners. We have all made mistakes. That seems to be how we learn. Repeating the same mistakes over and over is what is injurious to our own purpose. However we are free to do that as well. What we should ask ourselves is : "Which pain for what result?" Enlightenment doesn't care how you get there. If you're not going to be thinking about it in heaven or nirvana or whatever you wish to name it, what's the point in worrying about it here and now? It's alright to have a good time. Some say that it is only through excess, that one can know what is enough. Others have said, moderation even within moderation. Being Here-Now is thought by many to be the first step towards Liberation. See everything as enlightened, granting everyone and everything the enlightenment you wish for yourself, may also be considered a possible first step.
  2. Know that we are all equal beings. What you are, I can be. What I am, you can be. This is also true of the Universe which has created us "in Its own image". What the Universe Is, we can be. You can define this as anything you believe to be True.
  3. Create time in your life to be conscious. Too often, we get so tense or stressed with our responsibilities that we forget to take pleasure in the moment.
  4. Sit quietly and let your thoughts and judgments arise and dissipate by themselves. Remain in the here and now. Become calm and clear.
  5. Take a walk in a park. Make special note of the various odors you smell, the noises you hear, and objects you see. Approach other everyday situations in the same way. Doing this often brings you closer to pure consciousness.
  6. Practice meditation, which you can do anywhere, at any time by simply focusing on the present and emptying your mind.
  7. Try other meditative exercises, for example Yoga or Aïkido. Combined with meditation, these exercises can also bring you much enjoyment.
  8. Read what others have written about enlightenment and spirituality in general. Many of the great philosophers such as Gautama, Jesus, Lao Tzu, Paul of Tarsus, Mohammed, Dante, Francis Bacon, William Blake and others. The Doors of Perceptionhave much to say about this subject, both directly and indirectly.
  9. Learn about the Noble eight fold path and understand the 4 Noble Truths
  10. Always be mindful of the moment and take pleasure in all activities that you do during the day (eating, sleeping, even using the bathroom).
  11. The steps listed here are basic possible helpful practices. A real "step" towards enlightenment would be to make something that is now an unconscious part of you conscious. i.e. "integration". Practical steps toward integration can be found in the related how to wikis.
  12. The way to enlightenment as described by Shakyamuni / Gotama Buddha Himself is "by doing good deeds and not doing bad deeds throughout many lives." However, "good" and "bad" are relative concepts. What is "good" one day, may be "bad" another day. This is difficult for many of us to accept, be ready to accept change.
  13. Enlightenment is not a state of mind that you can force yourself into. We live by the eternal law of cause and effect, which is, if you do something bad you will get a bad result, if you do something good you will get a good result. What matters is the consciousness you experience regardless of what takes place.
  14. When approached with intent, sparking higher consciousness is natural. Walking can spark higher consciousness. Use walking as the rhythmic cycle of meditation. Just like aspirants learn to count their cycle of breath to consume normal and allow higher consciousness to come forth. The cycles or steps in salking can serve this same purpose. This same thing happens in music with the rhythm, that is, normal consciousness is consumed, allowing higher to consciousness come flooding in for the musician, bringing forth the higher consciousness of Creation. Don Juan put the flooding of images into walking for Carlos Castaneda. Carlos hiked with Don Juan while having his eyes crossed in order to flood the vision and insure the total consumption of normal consciousness. Any time normal consciousness is consumed, higher consciousness will be present and knowing. This, in of itself, will promote an awareness of higher consciousness. This awareness of higher consciousness while walking will motivate more walking/meditation and ability to walk/meditate more and more.

Tips

  • The process can take as much or as little time as you wish.
  • You are the key to your own enlightenment.
  • Learning Yoga, Tai-Chi, or Aïkidocan possibly help.
  • It is possible to experience yourself as pure consciousness.
  • Some "trance" states can assist your transfiguration and others can lead you astray. Remember, you are ultimately always in control.
  • A (qualified) teacher who has "been there," knows the way, and can tell you what to watch out for is as much of a responsibility as it is an asset.
  • Nothing is always correct or incorrect, "things" change. Choose what is best for you at any given moment however, remember you are never alone, what you choose may or may not have an effect on others. Kindness and good manners may be the best trick. In a word, "Compassion" or; "give (do) to others the best you would give (do) if you were in the same situation".
  • "Mind expanding" drugs (or psychoactive substances) aren't exactly the most reliable way to try to find enlightenment. They can be compared to using a helicopter instead of climbing to the summit of a mountain however, the fact remains that you're at the summit nonetheless. Be forewarned that Psychotropic substances aren't exactly the easiest way of achieving a certain degree of enlightenment, a psychedelic crisis remains a possibility. At the same time fears may arise remember, they can be overcome or rather they can be transcended. In the end, enlightenment has to come from within yourself.
  • Enlightenment is not something that someone else can do for you. No one can "save" you but yourself. The same is true of saving others. The rest is of the order of the Divine.
  • Your own "common sense" (or "intuition") is also your best guide.
  • What's real? Our senses may deceive us but our emotions don't.
  • Higher consciousness is available to all of us who seek it. You don't even have to do anything. You're not going to fade away by finding out how free you really are.

Warnings

  • You must learn to trust yourself completely.
  • Beware to not "overdo it." Moderation is helpful.
  • Beware of "mind expanding" drugs as they can be dangerous to the inexperienced.
  • It is best not to "seek" enlightenment per se, but accomplish each act of life as consciously as you can and remind yourself that each step is its own reward.
  • Scientific understanding is based on the repetition of duplicable events and miracles don't seem to be duplicable. Therefore, there is no real scientific way to understand miracles. Our own consciousness is miracle enough.
  • We teach best what we most need to learn.

Things You'll Need

  • Trust. Trust the flow of the Universe.
  • A heart full of Love. Because Love is the strongest magic of all.
  • Indifference to external aspects of "things", ie. maintain an overall view of the "Big Picture".

How To-13: "How to Gain Understanding of the Bible"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

God loves you, treasures you and seeks to support you in your life. You can gain insight into how God works with humanity through reading the Bible.

Steps

  1. Understand first of all that God's Spirit moved over the minds of the writers of the various biblical books but that God did not make them into recording machines so that the Biblical account will have things in it which reflect human beliefs as well as those which are from God. Talk with others about what you are reading, look at good biblical commentaries and pray often.
  2. The translation that you are reading may have flaws because it was penned by human beings but also remember that God's Spirit can get around any discrepancy and reveal the rich truths that God wants you to know. For this reason most any translation is OK to start with.
  3. Understand that Jesus is God's Living Word and that the Bible is a record of truths / beliefs written down by humans; always compare Christ's example with what you are reading.
  4. Understand that the Bible is a historical book and that while some of its messages may be applicable today not all may seem to.
  5. Know the central theme of God's personal message to you is Jesus, both in the Old and New Testaments
  6. Look for Jesus in each book. All scripture either points to the cross or refers back to it.
  7. Approach it expectantly. Expect God to reveal Himself, answer your questions, and change your life for the better.
  8. Understand that the hardest part of Bible study is in getting started. So be patient with yourself and work toward consistency. Five minutes per day is much better than an hour once a month. A simple decision followed by daily determination is necessary.
  9. Set a daily study time. Routine is so important. Treat it like an appointment that you cannot miss. Scheduling your study time first thing and then everything else around it is always best.
  10. Soon you will notice that a desire to attend your study has developed and you will find it getting very enjoyable and much easier. Surprise!
  11. Suddenly you may realize that you have missed your appointment for several days in a row and you may feel terrible about yourself. Disappointment may follow. Don't worry. Just pick up where you left off and stay in the flow. Regularity will develop over time.

Tips

  • Get a Bible that you can write in and highlight scripture that has special meaning. You might like to consider one with wide-margins or a ring-bound one so you can add notes.
  • Start in The New Testament in the letters written to the Churches by Paul. These are the earliest Christian documents, then look at Mark, the first of the Gospels.
  • Do not start in the Old Testament with the books of Leviticus or Deuteronomy. Begin with the prophets like Amos and Hosea. Not only are the books shorter - they are a good introduction to what God expects of all human beings.

Warnings

  • Don't become a lone ranger. Find a good church with a good Pastor who is apt to teach you. Seek and you will find. Joining a church is like joining a gym. You get in shape much sooner with like minded people. A Bowflex {Bible} in your bedroom will soon become a clothing rack.

How To-12: "How to Find the Meaning of Life through Christ"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

To find the meaning of life you need to turn to the creator of life. How did we get here? What is our purpose? We were created for God's family. Until we figure it out, we go through life aimlessly trying to fill it with the latest gadgets, material things, idolized entertainers, vacations, or personal vices. There is eternity written in the heart of every person. We all have a void that can only be filled by our Creator.
Why not check it out for yourself? God promises we will find Him, if we seek Him with all our hearts.

Steps

  1. Buy or borrow a Bible, if you don't have a good one you can read easily.
  2. Pray that God will show you the truth in His Word.
  3. Begin by reading the gospel of John, in the New Testament.
  4. Find a church that stands on the authority of God's Word and teaches His gospel.
  5. Discover the meaning of life and how to obtain eternal life with Jesus Christ.

Tips

  • Open your heart and mind. You will find there's so much more than what the world has to offer. Things of the world pale in comparison to the promises of God. Christianity is far from boring. It's the only way to live!
  • Feed your spirit as you feed your physical body with daily scripture study and prayer.
  • Ask God what is true. He loves you and will answer your prayers.
  • Men can and do lie but God, who can only speak the truth, will speak to you by the Holy Spirit, through the Bible.

Warnings

  • Some people will be turned off by you if you become a religious zealot. Keep in mind that salvation in the end is between God and individual people.
  • Make sure to share the gospel with gentleness and respect, not aggression and judgment. Be Christ-like.

How To-11: "How to Establish Personal Quiet Time with God"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

An editor has suggested a title change:Please visit the discussion page for details. In accordance with the title policy, titles should be the most concise, most commonly searched way to describe the content. To suggest a new title, change this template or comment on the discussion page. Notice added on 2008-01-22.

There is a need to establish "quiet time" with God. Learn how to block out the distractions of house and home and enjoy refreshing daily fellowship with God.

Steps

  1. Devote your wake-up time to God, whether you work the first shift or the third shift. It gets your "day" off on the right foot and the Bible encourages us to give our "first fruits" to God. Those first few minutes are important to devote to God and seek His blessing on the rest of your day.
  2. Start with just five minutes a day and then add on to that time gradually. There is no set time limit or maximum. Do what feels right to you.
  3. Include ACTS:
    • Adoration. Giving praise to God for who He is...Adore Him!
    • Confession. Acknowledge the sin in your life and ask for forgiveness. He is faithful to forgive...and forget!
    • Thanksgiving. Give thanks for all He's done for you...and all He is doing for You now and in the future.
    • Supplication. Tell Him what you need to live right - grace, peace...and whatever physical needs you have such as healing. Also, intercede for others who need help from God.

  4. Feel free at any time to just sit in silence...here's where you can hear what God wants to say to you!

Tips

  • As you grow spiritually, this framework can be changed according to how you feel comfortable. Always seek God on how He wants your relationship to proceed.

Warnings

  • Don't get "religious" or legalistic about it...that means to do things the same way forever because you've always done it that way. See "Tips".

How To-10: "How to Find Truth According to Islam"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

For the sincere truth seekers in life, take the patience to read and ponder this "how-to".

Steps

  1. Know what Islam means. Islam means submission to the will of the only God. That God is our Creator, who created us out of nothing and deserves our praise. A Muslim is someone who peacefully submits to the will of The One Creator, Who will test us on the Day of Judgment based on our obedience of His Laws (not the ones we create for ourselves). That Creator's proper name is Allah (The One to worship, in Arabic).
  2. Know the prophets of religion. The Lord sent a prophet to every nation to teach them right from wrong and warn them of the Day of Judgment. Relaying the message of Allah, the prophets gave the glad tidings of eternal Paradise to those who obey, and a stern warning of eternal hellfire to those who reject the truth when delivered to them.
  3. Worship The One God with no partners, as it is he alone who made you; follow the prophets; believe in the Day of Judgment; enjoin good; forbid evil.
  4. Acknowledge the other scriptures; five known scriptures were revealed: the Scrolls to Abraham, the Torah to Moses, the Psalms to David, the Gospel to Jesus, and the Qur'an to Muhammad [in that order, pbut].
  5. Don't believe everything you hear. Investigate for yourself. This is the most important decision of your life, it's not like choosing what degree to seek, and which house to buy. This life has an end.
  6. Research the religion and know the what the Five pillars of Islam are. They are:
    • Allah is the only god, and Muhammed (pbuh) is his prophet
    • To pray 5 times a day, everyday, at the correct times.
    • To fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
    • To give part of your wealth to charity on a regular basis
    • To visit the Kabbah in Mecca, if able to do so.

Tips

  • Allah has promised that the Qur'an will be guarded and never be changed.
  • Not even one letter has changed - so many people even memorize the whole Qur'an.
  • Many people have come to Islam post 9/11.
  • Muslim women wear the hijab to obey Allah's command. Many people see this as oppression when they are only guarding their chastity.
  • Research the religion to find out what is haraam and what is halaal (what is unlawful and was is lawful). You may be surprised to know that you cannot eat carnivorous animals, or have partners unless married. There are many more "rules" you must follow, and it's best to take it from a reliable source and not the media.
  • Go to the websites listed below for more information.

Warnings

  • This life surely has an end - no matter how grand you get in this life, you will die someday.
  • Don't blame Islam for it's misguided followers. This game can be played with all religions.
  • Never take the media's word for it. Islam has nothing to hide. Go research Islam yourself, and you will realize the truth.
  • Don't be afraid to accept the truth - you are never guaranteed the next breath in life - when Allah wills, you are dead.
  • If some teachings ever 'fail', it doesn't mean that it is wrong.

Things You'll Need

  • Quran
  • English version of Quran, with detailed translations
  • Go to a Mosque and learn from other Muslims
  • Patience, discipline, and an open mind willing to learn

How To-9: "How to Become a Buddha"

How to Become a Buddha

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

To qualify as a Buddha, a World Teacher, an aspirant must prepare himself over an inconceivably long period of time spanning countless lives. During these past lives, the future Buddha is referred to as a bodhisattva, an aspirant to the full enlightenment of Buddhahood. In each life the bodhisattva must train himself, through altruistic deeds and meditative effort, to acquire the qualities essential to a Buddha. According to the teaching of rebirth, at birth our mind is not a blank slate but brings along all the qualities and tendencies we have fashioned in our previous lives. Thus to become a Buddha requires the fulfillment, to the ultimate degree, of all the moral and spiritual qualities that reach their climax in Buddhahood. These qualities are called paramis or paramitas, transcendent virtues or perfections. Different Buddhist traditions offer slightly different lists of the paramis. In the Theravada tradition they are said to be tenfold: generosity, moral conduct, renunciation, wisdom, energy, patience, truthfulness, determination, loving-kindness, and equanimity. In each existence, life after life through countless cosmic aeons, a bodhisattva must cultivate these sublime virtues in all their manifold aspects.

Steps

  1. Listen to teachings; and 'renounce' (not abandon) the conventional world with its ideas, motivations etc. This includes reading books, attending Buddhist community events, browsing forums, asking questions, propitiating the religious community, the immaculate Buddha, and all the holders of the Dharma. Perfect beings don't need to teach you, so you have to ask them to teach you. Mahayana Buddhists are bound by compassion to teach you. Essentially, prepare yourself as a vessel into which the teachings can be poured. The perfect vessel to receive the teachings has 3 qualities: 1) It is not already full or upturned. One must give up pride in what one already knows in order to receive the teachings and willing to receive teachings. 2) It is not dirty. One must not try to mix the teachings with what is already in the vase. This will only lead to confusion. 3) It is not broken. Remember what is taught, otherwise the teachings fall straight through the vase.
  2. Contemplate the teachings. Don't simply accept the teachings, investigate them thoroughly. Always consider the teachings in their context and try to clarify all doubts and misconceptions you have. This can be done, again, by reading associated material, visiting discussion forums, asking experienced practitioners, preferably ordained monks and nuns, and recognized Masters.
  3. Meditate on the teachings. The teachings are a vehicle for you to achieve lasting peace and happiness. They are not a means for themselves. Accumulating teachings and not integrating them into your life is like baking a cake and not eating it. Without meditation, the subtle points will be missed and realizations will not arise.

Tips

  • Trying to spread the teachings / help sentient beings, without having a firm understanding / without being grounded in realization, is like handing another person your torch and leaving yourself in the dark. Only a realized master can light another's torch and retain his own radiance.
  • Another way to look at it is that we are all drowning in the sea of our past karma. A drowning man cannot save another, so just try to save yourself. When you are enlightened, there will be an endless sea of beings for you to benefit. You can dedicate your own efforts to the future enlightenment of others.
  • "Meditation without prior instruction is the way of the beast" - Sakya Pandita. So endeavor to learn more, whatever your capacity.
  • Every sentient being has Buddha Nature. The bacteria on the sole of your shoe can achieve it! If you put your mind to it, you are bound to achieve absolute peace.
  • The path to enlightenment takes a long time and is fraught with obstacles. Yet there is no greater achievement, and there is no greater bliss. The heavens are conditioned. As all phenomenal existence, they do not last, and residence there is lengthy, but still only temporary. Eventually, all Gods reincarnate when their merit has run dry. Therefore, the wise seek only perfect enlightenment.
  • It is difficult to gauge one's progress on the path, and even more difficult to gauge the realization of others. However, disinterest in the gamut of samsaric experience and an increased feeling of compassion for those who suffer are pretty good signs.
  • The path to enlightenment is profound, unlike any other.
  • Relax.

Warnings

  • Take the teachings and run - don't get involved in politics. When you become a realized master, then you can dispute for others' benefit, not before.
  • Obstacles on the path to enlightenment can indicate progress. They would not arise if there were nothing to obstruct i.e. your intention to gain enlightenment.
  • Don't be bull-headed with what you learn. Understand why Buddhism is called 'The Middle Way'.

Things You'll Need

  • To have an open mind.
  • Bodhicitta, the will to enlightenment, to be happy, for yourself and for others. All other qualities (generosity, discipline / morality, patience, diligence, concentration, wisdom) can be developed.

How To-8: "How to Become Mentally and Spiritually Emancipated"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Emancipation is possible for anyone. Three aspects of our selves can be bonded, thus making us immobile: physical, mental, and spiritual. This article will focus on emancipating the mind, the springboard of action.

Steps

  1. Breathe deeply over and over in order to attain a level of relaxation. Free your mind from the bonds of the body, the nervousness, the anxiety, the feelings of being tied down. You are not shackled; you are not a rock.
  2. If you are experiencing difficulty, engage in yoga practices or pick up a copy of "Zen Mind Beginner's Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki. Be patient and you will be rewarded.
  3. Find ways to remove all negative thoughts, all vices, all neurons of darkness, and all the things that created your own personal bondage. You are you; you are in control; you can do it.
  4. Check out Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance" (less than twenty pages and it will change your way of thinking, for the better). Read and be freed from social restraints, ideas and people.
  5. Find a sense of purpose. Ask yourself, why should I be emancipated? What will I receive? Remember, you will benefit from freeing yourself.

Tips

  • Believe in your inner strength, your mind.
  • Take a road trip, and read Kerouac's "On the Road."
  • Listen to the blues.

Warnings

  • Emancipators face negativity from traditionalists.
  • Obstacles can deter emancipation.

How To-7: "How to Meditate for Self Realization"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

This is a very easy meditation to feel the connection with ourselves. We are all spiritual people, but knowing how to connect is something we can learn. This meditation is taught by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi who has worked her whole life to transform the whole world.

Steps

  1. Learn that inside all of us we have a spiritual energy which loves us very much and is like our own mother. We will be asking her for the connection to ourselves.
  2. Take off your shoes and sit comfortably.
  3. Put your left hand on your lap with your palm facing up.
  4. Put your right hand on your heart. It is OK to keep your eyes open to follow along. Ask inside "Mother, am I the pure eternal spirit?" (name any power/deity you feel comfortable with) When you are ready take your right hand and put it on the left side of your neck/shoulder and say inside, "Mother, I am not guilty for anything."
  5. Realize that we don't have to feel guilty because any mistakes we have made can be easily forgiven by the power of forgiveness. So take your right hand and put it on your forehead. We have to forgive everyone and ourselves from our heart.
  6. Say sincerely from your heart, "Mother, I forgive everyone and I forgive myself." We also ask forgiveness from the divine power. All we have to do is ask. So take your right hand and put it on the back of your head. Ask from your heart, "If I have done anything wrong, please forgive me." Now the greatest thing is to be connected to our true selves and to feel that. So now take your right hand and put the palm on top of your head. Push down with some pressure and ask from your heart, "Mother, please give me the connection to my true self and let me feel that within myself."
  7. Take down your hand and let it rest on your lap with the palm facing up. Now close your eyes and sit for as long as you like.

Tips

  • Breathe deeply and regularly during this process.
  • Its best to be undisturbed (no cell phone, distractions, interruptions)
  • Take your time with this and repeat!

Warnings

  • You may feel strong emotions during this meditation, this is natural as you come in contact with your true self, allow these emotions to arise and fall away naturally, accept them and don't judge them.
  • If you feel very disturbed by any emotions, please contact a professional counselor, they will help you more fully understand yourself.

How To-6: "How to Open Your Spiritual Chakras"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

According to Hindu and/or Buddhist belief, chakras are vast (yet confined) pools of energy in our bodies which govern our psychological qualities. There are seven main chakras in all; four in our upper body, which govern our mental properties, and three in the lower body, which govern our instinctual properties. They are:
  1. The root chakra
  2. The sacral chakra
  3. The navel chakra
  4. The heart chakra
  5. The throat chakra
  6. The third eye chakra
  7. The crown chakra.

Ideally, all of the chakras should contribute to a human's wellbeing. Our instincts would join forces with our feelings and thinking. However, this is unfortunately not the case. Some of our chakras are usually not open all the way (meaning, they operate excellently), and some are even over-active. If the chakras are not balanced, peace with the self cannot be achieved.
There are many ways to open your chakras, which are needed in many cases. However, if you are opening your chakras, there is no need to try and make over-active chakras less active. They are simply compensating for the inactivity of closed chakras. Once all of the chakras are opened, the energy evens out, and becomes balanced.
Read on to discover the art of becoming aware of the chakras, as well as a very reliable technique designed to open them.

Steps

  1. Open the Root Chakra
    • Use the body and become aware of it. Do yoga, walk around the block, or do some manual house-cleaning. These activities let your body become known to you, and will strengthen the chakra.
    • Ground yourself. This means that you should connect with the ground, and feel it beneath you. To do this, stand up straight and relaxed, put your feet shoulder width apart, and slightly bend your knees. Move your pelvis forward a little, and keep your body balanced, so that your weight is evenly disributed over the soles of your feet. Then sink your weight forward. Stay in this position for several minutes.
    • After grounding yourself, sit cross-legged, as shown in the picture above.
    • Let the tips of your thumb and index finger touch gently, in a peaceful motion.
    • Concentrate on the Root chakra and what it stands for, at the spot in between the genitals and the anus.
    • Silently, yet clearly, chant the sound "LAM."
    • All this time, let yourself relax, still thinking about the chakra, it's meaning, and how is does or should affect your life.
    • Keep doing this until you are completely relaxed. You may have a "clean" feeling.

  2. Open the Sacral Chakra.
    • Sit on your knees, with your back straight, but relaxed.
    • Lay your hands in your lap, palms ups, on top of each other. Left hand underneath, the palm touching the back fingers of the right hand, and the thumbs touch gently.
    • Concentrate on the Sacral Chakra and what it stands for, at the sacral bone (lower back).
    • Silently, yet clearly, chant the sound "VAM."
    • All this time, let yourself relax, still thinking about the chakra, it's meaning, and how it does or should affect your life.
    • Keep doing this until you are completely relaxed. Again, you may have a "clean" feeling.

  3. Open the Navel Chakra.
    • Again, sit on your knees, with your back straight, but relaxed.
    • Put your hands before your stomach, slightly below your solar plexus. Let the fingers join at the tops, all pointing away from you. Cross the thumbs and straighten the fingers (this is important).
    • Concentrate on the Navel Chakra and what it stands for, at the spine, slightly above the navel.
    • Silently, yet clearly, chant the sound "RAM."
    • All this time, let yourself relax even more, continuing to think about the chakra, it's meaning, and how it does or should affect your life.
    • Keep doing this until you are completely relaxed. You should have a "clean" feeling (for every chakra).

  4. Open the Heart Chakra.
    • Sit cross-legged.
    • Let the tips of your index finger and thumb touch on both hands.
    • Put your left hand on your left knee and your right hand in front of the lower part of your breastbone.
    • Concentrate on the Heart Chakra and what it stands for, at the spine, level with the heart.
    • Silently, but clearly, chant the sound "YAM."
    • All this time, continue to relax your body, and think of the chakra, it's meaning, and how it does or should affect your life.
    • Keep doing this until you are completely relaxed, and the "clean" feeling returns and/or intensifies within your body.

  5. Open the Throat Chakra.
    • Once again, sit on your knees.
    • Cross your fingers on the inside of your hands, without the thumbs. Let the thumbs touch at the tops, and pull them up a bit.
    • Concentrate on the Throat Chakra and what it stands for, at the base of the throat.
    • Silently, but clearly, chant the sound "HAM."
    • All this time, keep on relaxing your body, thinking of the chakra, it's meaning, and how it does or should affect your life.
    • Keep doing this for about five minutes, and the "clean" feeling will intensify once again.

  6. Open the Third Eye Chakra.
    • Sit cross-legged.
    • Put your hands in front of the lower part of the breast. The middle fingers should be straight and touch the tops, pointing away from you. The other fingers are bent and touch at the two upper phalanges. The thumbs point towards you and meet at the tops.
    • Concentrate on the Third Eye Chakra and what it stands for, a little above the center of the two eyebrows.
    • Silently, but clearly, chant the sound "OM" or "AUM."
    • All this time, relaxation of the body should come a bit naturally, and continue to think of the chakra, it's meaning, and how it does or should affect your life.
    • Keep doing this until the same "clean" feeling seems to come back or intensify.

  7. Open the Crown Chakra.
    • Sit cross-legged.
    • Lay your hand before your stomach. Let the little fingers point up and away from you, touching at their tops, and cross the rest of the fingers with the left thumb underneath the right.
    • Concentrate on the Crown Chakra and what it stands for, at the very top of your head.
    • Silently, but clearly, chant the sound "NG" (yes, this chant is as hard as it looks).
    • All this time, your body should now be totally relaxed, and your mind should be at peace. However, do not stop concentrating on the Crown Chakra.
    • This meditation is the longest, and should take no less than ten minutes.
    • WARNING: don't use this meditation for the Crown Chakra if your Root Chakra is not strong or open. Before dealing with this last chakra, you need a strong "foundation" first, which the Root exercises will present to you.

The Chakras & What They Are For

  • The ROOT Chakra (red): This chakra is based on being physically aware and feeling comfortable in many situations. If opened, you should feel well-balanced and sensible, stable and secure. You don't distrust people around you for no reason. You feel present in what is happening right now, and very connected to your physical body. If it's under-active: you tend to be fearful or nervous, and easily feel unwelcome. If it's over-active: you may be materialistic and greedy. You feel as if you should be secure and are unwelcome to a change.
  • The SACRAL Chakra (orange): This chakra deals with feeling and sexuality. If open, feeling are released with liberty, and are expressed without you being over-emotional. You would be open to affinity and can be passionate aas well as outgoing. You also have no problems based on sexuality. If it's under-active: you tend to be unemotional or impassive, and are not very open to anybody. If it's over-active: you tend to be sensitive and emotional all the time. You may also be very sexual.
  • The NAVEL Chakra (yellow): This chakra encircles confidence, especially when in a group. When open, you should feel in control and have good feeling of dignity in youreslf. If it's under-active: you tend to be passive and indescisive. You could be frequently apprehensive and this doesn't reward you. If it's over-active: you tend to be imperious and aggressive.
  • The HEART Chakra (green): This chakra is (you guessed it!) all about love, caring, and endearment. When open, you seem to be compassionate and friendly, always working in amicable relationships. If it's under-active: you tend to be cold and unfriendly. If it's over-active: you tend to be so "loving" towards people that you suffocate them, and you could be seen as selfish for it.
  • The THROAT Chakra (light blue): This chakra is based on self-expression and communication. When the chakra is open, expressing yourself is easy, and art seems to be a great way to do this. If it's under-active: you tend not to speak too much, so you are classified as shy. If you lie often, this chakra can be blocked. If it's over-active: you tend to speak so much, it annoys a lot of people. You could also be a pretty bad listener.
  • The THIRD EYE Chakra (blue): Like it's name, this chakra deals with insight. When open, you have excellent clairvoyance, and tend to dream a lot. If it's under-active: you tend to look up to other people to think for you. Relying on beliefs too often, you also tend to be confused most of the time. If it's over-active: you tend to live in a world imagination all day long. In the extremes, you could suffer from frequent daydreams or even hallucinations.
  • The CROWN Chakra (pink): This is the seventh and most spiritual chakra. It encircles a being's wisdom and being one with the universe. When this chakra is open, prejudice dissapears from your To Do list, and you seem to become more aware of the world and it's connection to yourself. If it's under-active: you tend to not be very spiritual, and may be quite rigid in your thoughts. If it's over-active: you tend to intellectualise things all the time. Spirituality seems to come first in your mind, and if you are really over-active, you may even ignore your bodily needs (food, water, shelter).

Tips

  • Sit in a quiet and warm area, treat this exercise as you would a meditation. During the summer, you could sit in a field or in a garden. During the winter, a warm room with no distractions. If you have a sauna, although few people do, it is an excellent place to sit, calm yourself, and clear your head.

How To-5: "How to Become More Spiritual"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Do you sometimes feel like you've lost yourself, or that you're not really yourself at all? Or do you simply want to grow or become who you should be? Here are some tips that may help. Keep in mind that even though these tips are categorized as "spiritual," anyone can apply these, even if you do not consider yourself spiritual.
Apply any of these that you wish. The more, the more "spiritual" you may become. See the Tips and Spiritual Benchmarks below as well.

Steps

  1. Go to a place with no noise at all and sit down. If you can't find a completely quiet place, go where at least it is comforting sounds, and sit down. Consider bringing a notebook or journal.
  2. Start meditating; you can also sit in a yoga position if you would like.
  3. Clear your mind from all thoughts. After clearing your mind, either free-think or else, if you have a topic in mind, focus on that. However, avoid dead end, angering, and solution-less subjects. Focus on subjects where you are certain you can find new ground and progress. Another option is to look into your life, or your inner self, and think about what's going on right now. Anything that will help you focus and see helpful pictures or thoughts. If you want, journal or draw.
  4. Ask yourself why you are feeling the way that you do or why you are feeling so empty. "How can this be a good or bad thing?" "What causes it?" "How can I solve it?" After looking inward, consider your position among others around you. It may be high or equal or low, but don't let that determine whether it is good or bad. Examine each type of situation, each relationship, and decide whether it would be better to be change or be more flexible.
  5. List some of your life goals, and see celebrate if you have achieved them. Create steps to progress with goals still remaining. Say a prayer. Sing a song. Take a break and hop around a bit.
  6. Planning for next time. Think about what activity or what action(s) you've done recently that helped you feel fulfilled. Was it reading books, or a holy book(s), or taking a walk, meditating, helping people in need, doing yoga...? Plan steps to do something fulfilling in the next few days and weeks. Close with a prayer, a resolution. Consider sharing it with others.
  7. Ask yourself each day before going to bed what you have done to keep your inner self or being healthy or sensitive. Don't only think about your body (though you should do that too), your soul is also important for you. Don't only think about your own concerns, but think about those of others as well.
  8. Additional spiritual goals: grow in vulnerability. (Most, though not all, icons of spirituality possessed this quality.) Grow in shrewdness or wisdom. (These teachers also possessed this!) Explore other belief systems. Develop an open mind in order to develop a closed mind. This means learning ideas and perspectives different from your own so that you can develop your own opinion about them. Sacrifice and accept the sacrifice of others.
  9. Read or Journal further. Doing this even on scratch sheets of paper is fine. Literate people have some amazing gifts--along with responsibilities--the rest of the world is doing without, so take advantage of them. Have a conversation with people who have experiences you want to know more about or who have 'been there.' Discuss or explain spiritual concepts, practices, or inspiring words with someone else in need. Teachers are learners.
  10. Seek out a spiritual group in your environment. Go with a friend. This can be any size group. Have some questions in mind before-hand and ask them at an appropriate time.

Spiritual Benchmarks

Here are some possible benchmarks and adaptability tests to test your "spiritual" life's ability to handle various opportunities/trials/scenes in life. Could some part of your spirituality do the following...
  • ...be found consistent with various forms of rational investigation.
  • ...make you happy/satisfied in "heaven"?
  • ...help you live well with a romantic partner and family?
  • ...help you live well without a romantic partner and family?
  • ...put some bread on the table and a roof over your head?
  • ...fill the need of a young kid dying and alone in a remote part of a Third World country? (Such kids do exists. You can look it up online.)
  • ...address the needs of others around you?
  • ...address the needs of society at large?
  • ...help change the life of criminals or life-abusers? (Whether you would want it to may be a whole other story.)
  • ...help improve the life of even some of the best people you know?
  • ...allow you to come to know and face your fears head on?
  • ...lead towards a proper use of power, wealth, and success?
  • ...strengthen your understanding of different virtues such as responsibility, excitement, honesty, integrity, respect, etc?
  • ...cause you to do right or good things even when you don't necessarily feel like doing a right or good thing.
  • ...respond, change, or grow satisfactorily in conversations with "more spiritual"-seeming people or various leaders in your community/on the web?
  • ...respond, change, or grow satisfactorily in conversations with people who will disagree with you?
  • ...enable you to put yourself on the line for your friends?
  • Good luck!

Tips

  • As you journal or reflect, you may give thought some of the reasons people want to become more spiritual. Some initiating questions: Do you wonder whether there even is a "spiritual" life? How can it be seen or perceived? Whether or not you have doubts about it, what do you hope to accomplish with it? Or do you want to expand your horizons? Are you concerned about where you want life to head? Do you want to understand someone or grow in a relationship? Are you looking for fulfillment? Are you hurt by a person or some event? Are you empowered or encouraged by some other person or some other event? Do you want to accomplish more? Do you want a sense of inner peace distant from a busy life? Or are you trying to reach Nirvana? On the other hand, maybe you want to face life head on (rather than simply just get a quick get away) and so are looking for energy and/or direction to take care of the needs and aspirations of day-to-day living. Any or all of these reasons can apply to you. Plan to answer a different question each time you go out.
  • Related Phrases. Consider looking into the following topics as well: knowing God or the Oversoul (depending on whether you believe or want to explore the Highest Being as personal or impersonal, etc), relationship building, emotional balance or emotional resilience, discussion groups, discipline, sensitivity, methods of thinking or investigation, being thankful, leadership, wisdom, social skills, servitude or service, courage, love (various types), personal charisma, purity, hard work, energy, doing things the smart way, self-sacrifice, even good old-fashion karate kick-like power, etc.
  • Remember, a healthy soul and mind can help you get a healthier body.

Warnings

  • Be careful. Spirituality, as does life in general, has responsibilities. Be wary of spiritual abuse. Also watch what you allow yourself to accept: faith is a sense of or a true believing in something you can't see, but this doesn't mean lying to yourself. Acknowledge your doubts, even as you continue to believe, until you gain more experience or thought. Anytime we ask someone to ignore their doubts (though often we just do ourselves) and just blindly believe us, we might be spreading unethical and subtle forms of manipulation or control, that will in some capacity lead to problems down the road. If you are willing to let your spirituality be tested by a variety of situations and thoughts, then you are not as likely to become either a more damaged person or a more insensitive/prideful person. Always give room for mistakes and learning from them.

If you belong to a faith, getting to know God through a personal relationship with him is the most rewarding thing one can do. God offers his friendship as a free gift, but many people often reject this because they think it means "religion". Having a relationship with God is simple -just as any friendship would be. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life". John 3:16
“Say: if you love God, then follow me, God will love you and forgive you your faults, and God is forgiving, merciful” Holy Quran 3:31

Steps

  1. Know that God is a true being and that He loves you and that He wants to help you walk through life by walking with Him.
  2. Ask Him to forgive you of all your sins and mean it as well. "For All Have Sinned and Come Short of the Glory of God". Romans 3:23 "Say: 'O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of God: for God forgives all sins ): for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.'" (Quran 39:53)
  3. According to Christianity Jesus is considered a gift from God and, he died for you so that you could live with Him and not burn in Hell forever.
  4. According to Islam obeying God and living a righteous life will protect you from hell.
  5. Ask God to come into your life and change your and mold you into who He wants you to be.
  6. If you're a Christian, be baptized for the forgiveness of sins Acts 2:38
  7. If you are a Muslim, ask God for forgiveness or do Dua (supplication)
  8. Know that He heard your cry. Know also that you are His child and that you will go and live with Him forever when you leave this earth one day.
  9. Tell others about God.

Tips

  • Try to be consistent but not legalistic about spiritual disciplines.
  • Read the Holy book of your choice (Torah, Bible, Quran, etc) as a personal letter from God to you.
  • Those that take time to seek God will find Him.
  • Find other like minded believers to fellowship with.
  • Trust and obey God - the secret to a happy and fulfilled Life.
  • Keep your conscience clean - daily confession.
  • Forgiveness of self and others is essential.
  • Ask God to fill you daily with His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
  • Don't hold grudges or keep accounts.
  • Get your mind off self and look to others' interests.
  • Gratitude is the best attitude and God will bless you to be a blessing.
  • God sometimes speaks to us through our conscience, other people, spiritual literature, sermons, preachers/teachers
  • but primarily through the holy books, so very important to read it. Everything else is confirmation to what we read in the Bible. Watch out for verses that jump out at you.

Warnings

  • Try to understand the context and use your brain; don't assume you understand it - this could lead to misunderstanding the manual God left you to use.
  • Use discernment - even within holy temples (Church, Masque, etc)
  • Always love people - don't become critical or judgmental, you are not better than others but are saved through the grace of God.
  • Beware cultish movements that do not recognize God.
  • "Seek his Kingdom first and everything else will be added! Spend time with God, soak yourself in Him and the things of Him and you will know His will.
  • "An adulterous generation looks for a sign." God is greater than signs and wonders; that's why it requires faith to know God is there. He can do this but don't let your faith fail because of a lack of it.
  • Be aware that there is many other religious options other then the ones mentioned. If you are converting or joining a religion for the first time, do simple research to make sure that you are selecting the faith that best reflects your understanding of yourself, the world around you, and God.
  • Put God before everything else. It is really hard but really worth it.
  • Know that God is a loving God but you should have a Godly fear (aka respect) for Him.
  • Wait for things to happen in GOD'S TIME, not yours.

Things You'll Need

  • A Holy book - any version - one that is easy for you to read
  • A notepad and pen for keeping a journal
  • A quiet place - somewhere to be alone with God
  • Time allocated for meeting with God alone regularly
  • (Note - Don't put time aside for God, you should put time aside for everything else, but God should always be first.)

How To-2: "How to Find God"

How to Find God

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

If you feel a yearning to connect with a Higher Power, yours is a journey of self-discovery. These steps will help you to find out more through research and experience.

Steps

  1. It is not necessary to go to church or other place of worship to find God. You may choose to participate in a local worship center as this may be helpful to your search.
  2. Look at your local library. You will find helpful books about many different faiths in the religion section. Religious bookstores may offer different titles than the public library, but library books are cost-free and can be returned after you are finished with them. The public library will also have videos that can aid you in your search for God.
  3. Do not turn off your brain. Faith can be reasonable and rational. Faith is different from superstition. As a seeker, you will be looking for reasons for faith, for truth about spiritual matters and for evidence of a divine being. Be open-minded about the supernatural, without being gullible.
  4. Do not start your search with prejudice. Examine documents that support faith in God before you read writings that are critical. Be cautious of people that mock God and faith.
  5. Choose a person of faith. Ask them to give you direction. This does not need to be a vicar or nun or evangelist. Simply ask someone that you respect for their personal convictions.
  6. Compose questions for your search:
    • Is there a God?
    • What are the attributes or characteristics of the nature of God?
    • How would an infinite being be revealed to mortal men?
    • What is God's assessment of mankind?
    • If mankind needs redemption, how is it transacted?

  7. Speak to God. Most religions recognize prayer as a basic function of faith. Tell God about your quest and your reasons for choosing to become a seeker.
  8. God may be in plain sight. One reason you may find yourself looking for God is that your God is all you have ever seen, from day one, all around you. There is a very illustrative story in the Zen tradition that likens a man searching for God to a fish searching for the sea. Is it truly possible to search for something that you cannot lose?
  9. Be ready to discard whatever existing notions you may have of the nature of God. It has been said that in order to find God, one must give up God; or even to "kill" God, meaning killing one's human, finite concept of what God is. Using your finite mind to try to grasp infinity is like asking a fish to swallow the oceans of the world. You're bound to find something you aren't 100% ready for. If you don't, you're not being honest with yourself in your search.
  10. Be ready to look outside of religion. Religion and God are not the same thing. Their relationship is akin to the relationship between Exxon and gasoline. Nowadays, when you hear one, you automatically think of the other - but it wasn't always that way.

Tips

  • If you live near a church that offers seeker-sensitive meetings, you could start there, but any music and service will likely have 'a message'. This may help, or, may obstruct.
  • Some places of worship offer 'meetings' or 'courses' in a more neutral environment, more like a coffee shop or bookstore, to 'ask some questions about God'. These courses can help your search, but they can often feel designed to lead you in a particular direction.
  • You can find God on a very limited quantity of faith, as small as a tiny mustard seed.
  • You can find God more easily than you might expect, because God is also seeking you.

Warnings

  • Once you believe you have found God, realize that some people will not appreciate it if you attempt to force your finding on others. Hopefully, people will soon begin to see the differences in your life and ask you about it.
  • Realize that some people will insist that there has never been any verifiable proof that God exists.

How To-1: "How to Read the Bible"

How to Read the Bible

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

The Bible is considered, by some, to be the greatest and most important book ever written. As such, it can be daunting to read. Here are some things to consider as you get started.

Steps

  1. Regular Schedule is important. Try to stick with a schedule that works for you for reading, even if it is only half hour a day. Read at least a chapter at a time.
  2. Read it with an open heart and mind. Your aim should be to fill your mind with God's thoughts and how creator deals with humans.
  3. Reflect on what you have read and compare it with what you already know.
  4. Where to start For the first time reader of the Christian Bible, start reading in The Gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. - the books about Jesus life and works on earth. Build your appetite for reading more and how it relates to the other books.
  5. Topic by Topic Understand the Bible is not a single, massive novel. Don't try to read it start to finish, but rather in its intended books. for example creation is explained in Genesis, Poetry and song is in Job, Psalms, Song of Solomon... Wisdom for living is in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
  6. Remember that when the Bible was written it was NOT divided into chapters and verses. Verses were never meant to be quoted out of their context; read the whole of a book to get a sense of how the parts are to fit together. This also applies to letters, often referred to as epistles. Read the entire letter, not bits and pieces like a jigsaw puzzle.
  7. If you get stuck, or do not understand a passage, go to other people you trust for help. See if your conclusion matches God's character (Exodus 34), and continue from there.

Tips

  • Though many religions use one particular translation of the Bible (most commonly the 'King James Version') as their official 'canon', you may find it useful to begin with a more modernized text. A reputable bookseller should be able to direct you to an easier-to-read version. A good version to try is the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) as it is probably the closest to the intent of the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek of the earliest texts we have.
  • As you probably have noticed, people interpret the message of the Bible in many different ways. If you find yourself confused or curious, don't be afraid to share your concerns with a pastor or friend. However, don't allow anyone to force their beliefs on you. Be faithful to your understanding of the Book. True, sincere prayer will also clarify any doubts.
  • Approach the Bible with joy and honest curiosity. Don't fret if you can't understand a particular passage; search for the things that you do understand, and use them to make your life happier and more full.

Warnings

  • Be informed about the difference between a translation and a paraphrase. A translation is taken word-for-word from the oldest texts available (in most cases) and written in the usage of the intended language of the time. Thus, the KJV was translated from the oldest texts available in 1611, into a dialect of English now known as Early Modern English, which was in common use at the time. Some more up-to-date translations that are widely trusted are the New King James, and New American Standard, New world Translation, though this certainly is not a complete list. A paraphrase is different from translation in that the "translators" will use some discretion as to the intended meaning of a phrase, and translate the entire phrase into something more meaningful to today's reader. Such paraphrases are The Message, Wuest Expanded Translation, The New Living Translation, and others. Paraphrases are often written by one author, though collaboration in such projects is becoming more common. The accuracy of paraphrases is often in dispute, and not often recommended for Bible study. If in doubt, read several translations if you can, and pray for an answer.
  • Unfortunately the only good way to solve the translation issue is to learn the original languages of Koine Greek and Hebrew. If you are motivated to do this, find a synagogue near you to help teach you Hebrew; often they have classes for those interested in the language, or find a good study guide to begin the process. Greek is often harder to come by, and if one can find a learned pastor or professor the process would go more smoothly, though with careful study it can be learned on one's own.
