FOR SPIRITUAL SEEKERS

I was cycling this morning and I noticed a person about half a km ahead.

I could guess he was cycling a little slower than me and that made me feel good, I said to myself I will try catch up with him.

So I started cycling faster and faster. Every block, I was gaining on him a little bit.

After just a few minutes I was only about 100 feet behind him,
so I really picked up the pace and pushed myself. I was determined to catch up with him.

Finally, I did it! I caught up and passed him. Inwardly I felt very good. "I beat him".

Of course, he didn't even know we were racing.

After I passed him,
I realized I had been so focused on competing against him that
*I had missed my turn to my house* .

I had missed the focus on my inner peace,
I missed to see the beauty of greenery around,
I missed to do my inner soul searching meditation,
and in the needless hurry feet slipped from the paddle twice or thrice and might have hit the sidewalk and broken a limb.

It then dawned on me, isn't that what happens in life when we focus on competing with
co-workers, neighbours,
friends,
family,
trying to outdo them
or trying to prove that we are more successful
or more important and in the bargain
we miss on our happiness within our own surroundings?

We spend our time and energy running after them and we miss out on our own paths to our given destination.

The problem with unhealthy competition is that it's a never ending cycle.

There will always be somebody ahead of you,
someone with a better job,
nicer car,
more money in the bank,
more education,
a prettier wife,
a more handsome husband,
better behaved children,
better circumstances and
better conditions etc.

But one important realisation is that *'You can be the best that you can be, when you are not competing with anyone.'*

Some people are insecure because they pay too much attention to
what others are,
where others are going,
wearing and driving, what others are talking.

*Take whatever you have*,
the height, the weight and personality.  Accept it and realize, that you are blessed. Stay focused and live a healthy life.

*There is no competition in Destiny. Each has his own.*

Comparison AND Competition  is the thief of JOY. It kills the Joy of Living your Own Life.

*Run your own Race that leads to Peaceful, Happy Steady Life.*

*SKY Meditation and Introspection will help you in living a Peaceful life and in achieving Self Realisation*

What are the ways to destroy thoughts?

What are the ways to destroy thoughts?

There are four ways of destroying evil thoughts. A Jnana Yogin (student of the path of Knowledge) does it by living in OM or Truth. He destroys the evil thoughts by Vichara and attitude of indifference. He says, "This has nothing to do with me. I am Satchidananda-Svarupa, Sivoham, Sivoham. These impulses belong to the mind. I am distinct from the mind." A Bhakta destroys the same by prayer and self-surrender. He says, "O God! I have surrendered myself, the fruits of all actions and the actions themselves to Thee. Give me strength to drive away and destroy these evil thoughts." He gets help from God through self-surrender. God sublimates the sex-impulse into Sattva or Ojas (spiritual energy). The Raja Yogin destroys evil thoughts either by destroying the Vrittis as they arise or by substituting opposite, positive thoughts of Sattvic nature, by supplanting sublime thoughts.

Two-part documentary which deals with two of the deepest questions there are - what is everything, and what is nothing?

In two epic, surreal and mind-expanding films, PROFESSOR JIM AL-KHALILI searches for an answer to these questions as he explores the true size and shape of the universe and delves into the amazing science behind apparent nothingness.

The second part, Nothing, explores science at the very limits of human perception, where we now understand the deepest mysteries of the universe lie. Jim sets out to answer one very simple question - what is nothing? His journey ends with perhaps the most profound insight about reality that humanity has ever made. Everything came from nothing. The quantum world of the super small shaped the vast universe we inhabit today, and Jim can prove it.

Professor Jim Al-Khalili explores the true size and shape of the universe and delves into the amazing science behind apparent nothingness.

REMINISCENCES BY MONKS AND NUNS

Swami Yatiswarananda As We Know Him – Volume I (Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, Chennai – 600 004) p: 461 – 463
Chapter 36:
A Brief Meeting – 01
SWAMI SARVARUPANANDA
The author is the Head of Ramakrishna Mission, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

This must have been sometimes in 1962-63. As a teenager I had been hearing of the name of Swami Yatiswaranandaji Maharaj from Swami Deshikanandaji who headed the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama in Salem in Tamilnadu. Other monks of the Salem Ashrama such as Swami Sthiratmanandaji and Swami Nandanandaji too would refer to revered Swami Yatiswaranandaji Maharaj and speak of his greatness.

I was a young boy of 18 /19, often visiting and staying at the Salem Ashrama doing some Seva or just being in the company of Sadhus. Swami Deshikanandaji used to conduct a class on Gita for the students in the Sarada College at Salem and during his classes he would refer to Swami Yatiswaranandaji as an example of a Jnana Yogi and Swami Shambhavanandaji (of Mysore) as a Karma Yogi. I had attended some of these classes and was inspired to meet the persons whom he had referred to.
Armed with a letter of introduction, one day I ventured towards Bangalore, wanting to meet Swami Yatiswaranandaji at the Basavanagudi Ashrama. As a mark of respect, I purchased a few mangos which I carried with me. As I arrived at the Bangalore Bus-stand, I hired an auto-rickshaw and reached the Basavanagudi Ramakrishna Ashrama (as it was known then).

It must have been sometimes around one in the early afternoon. The temple had been closed for the noon-rest. As I arrived at the Ashrama and alighted from the auto-rickshaw, I spotted an elderly monk walking somewhere between the temple and the stone-building. He too saw me and paused. ‘Where are you coming from?’ he asked me.

‘I have a letter from Swami Deshikanandaji for Swami Yatiswaranandaji,’ I replied and then wanted to hand over the bag containing the mangos.
He inquired, ‘Is this for the temple?’

‘Yes,’ I replied.

He asked me to carefully take the mangoes to the temple. I asked him if I could meet Swami Yatiswaranandaji. He said, ‘You can meet him. But have you taken lunch?’ When I nodded in negative, he called some monk and asked him to take me to the kitchen/ dining hall.

I followed the monk (I think it was Swami Sureshanandaji) and reached the dining hall where I had my meals, lovingly served by the monk. As he served me, a mere young boy, the monk talked to me. I told him that I had come to meet Swami Yatiswaranandaji but Sureshanandaji said that as it was his resting time, I may not be able to meet him and could see him by four in the afternoon. When I pointed out that the elderly monk whom I had met asked me to see him after the lunch, the monk said that then I should go to the stone-building after the lunch.

RAISE YOUR VIBRATIONS, RAISE YOURSELVES!

GEMS : OTHER PEOPLE'S KARMA

Sadhguru: This actually applies not only to human beings but to all creatures. In India, people would not even step over a sleeping dog.

When your experience of life is limited to physicality, you think the boundary of a human being is the skin. If you expand the way you experience life a little more, you will see the boundary of a human being goes beyond the skin – to what extent depends upon who he or she is. The more you close your eyes and sit, the “fatter” you get – not in terms of fat as a substance – you get bigger. The less thinking you do, the larger your presence becomes.

Most people experience some semblance of peace and balance within them only when they are sleeping. Sleep is the most profound state that they know in their life. This is a most unfortunate way to live. When they are fast asleep, they are reasonably peaceful and balanced. When they are awake, they are all over the place.

So, when they lie down they are a little bigger. Especially if you are lying down on something hard, because there is no room for it to find expression on the side that you lie on, naturally it goes up to where there is space. Instead of your energies being all around you, it will be above you by about 50% to 100%.

The extended energy body
Let us say hypothetically speaking, your energy body is one foot beyond your skin. If you lie down, it could be approximately one-and-a-half or two feet. Without you knowing, some amount of clearing up or expanding of the energy body naturally happens. At those times, people will keep more distance from you – not out of respect but simply because of the size of your energy body at that moment. This is the way it should be – as it is required for that moment. If you have a certain sensitivity, you will naturally know these things. You may say this is some special endowment – I do not entirely deny that. But at the same time, people do not have this kind of sensitivity largely because they cannot pay attention to anything. They cannot pay attention to anything because they are dismissive about life around them.

When I was a five, six-year-old boy, I used to sit in the house, staring at something or sometimes at nothing. Much later, I realized in yoga, there is a mudra where you simply stare at nothing. Nothing is high, nothing is low. Something and nothing are the same to you – you are simply looking. Suddenly, my mother would pass by. Initially, I would see her, but the next time she would pass by, she would be all blurred and somewhat bigger. When she would pass by again, she would be almost transparent and even bigger.

Then my father would come. I would look at him with an empty stare. He would gesticulate in front of my eyes. Obviously, he was saying, “Why are you not studying?” or something like that. I did not hear the words, I just looked, and saw all kinds of things. Depending upon what kind of forms I saw, I knew what he was saying. He was worried that this boy was losing his mind, the way he was staring. If you paid enough attention, you would experience this yourself.

What’s hanging around you?

In the yogic physiology, there are three physical dimensions of your existence – the physical body, the mental body, and the energy body – annamaya kosha, manomaya kosha, pranamaya kosha. The physical body is made of physical material that we take from the planet in the form of food. The mental body is also made of material from the world around you, but this material is much subtler. We build the mental body with information, reverberation, sounds, and impressions.

Since the physical body is made of physical substance, it takes a reasonably proper form. Most people’s mental body does not have a clear-cut form. They are not even conscious of what they have gathered. For most human beings, not even 1% of the content is conscious. Because 99% is gathered unconsciously, the mental structure is scattered. It is quite a mess. If you can create a conscious structure to your mental form, and you are able to change the structure as per the requirement of the situation, your mind will be a magical instrument.

Your energy body too carries information. What form it takes depends upon what type of information is there within you. The information on the level of the physical body is called genetics. Likewise, there is information on the mental structure, and there is information on the energy structure.

People who are conscious do not want to trip over your mental body or your energy body. We do not know what kind of karma someone is carrying, but when they are sleeping or they are just about to fall asleep, the unconscious play of the karmic structure is at its highest. Because you do not perform any conscious activity, the unconscious activity is full-scale. People who are conscious do not want to trip over or walk into someone else’s karma. By stepping over someone, you are kind of walking into their karma.

Handling your “stuff”

It is wise not to pick up other people’s stuff because handling your own stuff is challenging enough. This is why once you are on spiritual sadhana, as a brahmachari, you do not hug anyone – doing “Namaskaram” is enough. We do not want to trip over your karma. Whether it is good or bad, we do not want to take it away from you. When your Guru has evolved a strategy for your specific karma, you should not mix it up with all kinds of people. Otherwise, it becomes unnecessarily complicated.

If you take in too much input from everywhere, the karmic process becomes very complicated. And the strategy evolved for your karma will not work if you keep mixing it up with someone else’s all the time. Why some who are in serious sadhana withdraw into a solitary cave or the like is because they do not want to complicate things. They understood the complexity of their own karma and do not want to complicate it anymore.

That is why you do not step over anyone. You can go around them. It is also a mark of respect. And apart from that, it would disturb that person if you step over them. If you disturb their energy body, they may not immediately wake up, but internally, it disturbs them.

All this comes from a fundamental understanding about life. No matter what you were doing – you were running a business, you were married, bearing and raising children, fighting a battle – for anyone who was born in this land, there was only one goal – ultimate liberation. Mukti was the only goal. The whole culture was structured around this. Many strategies were evolved so that you do not trip over someone else’s karma. You do not want to acquire anything new because you know the complexity of what you already have. If you undo your own puzzle, it is good enough. You do not want to complicate it.

What is discouragement and discrimination according to Swami Ramakrishanananda?

Discouragement

You need not complain that you are not successful in your attempts. So it is with almost all… Every child before it learns to walk falls down a hundred thousand times. I can assure you that God helps those who help themselves.

Discrimination

The first personal pronoun is at the root of all our miseries. Hence our primary duty should be to get rid of it somehow or other. This can be done by the service of the great, by good works without caring for results, by concentration or discrimination…

TRANSFORMING EMOTION TO DEVOTION

Bernard asked the Master, “What is the best way to transform emotion into devotion?”

“The company you keep” the Master replied, “will determine in what direction your feelings develop. In the company of devotees, those feelings will more easily become devotional.”

“Master,” pursued the disciple, “what if I am alone – for instance, when I meditate?”

“Am I not always with you?” the Master replied with a loving smile.

ALL ARE THE SAME

Human beings by nature want happiness and do not want suffering. With that feeling everyone tries to achieve happiness and tries to get rid of suffering, and everyone has the basic right to do this. In this way, all here are the same, whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, Easterner or Westerner, believer or nonbeliever, and within believers whether Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and so on. Basically, from the viewpoint of real human value we are all the same.

BLESSINGS FROM THE BIBLE!

ANECDOTE FROM THE LIFE OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

In 1881, a professor asked his student whether it was God who created everything that exists in the universe?

Student replied: Yes
He again asked:
What about evil?
Has God created evil also?

The student got silent...
Then the student requested that may he ask a question from him?

Professor allowed him to do so.

Student asked:

Does cold exist?

Professor said: Yes! Don't you feel the cold dear?

Student said:  I'm sorry but you are wrong sir.
Cold is a complete absence of heat...
There is no cold, it is only an absence of heat.

Student asked again:
Does darkness exist?

Professor Said:  Yes!

Student replied: you are again wrong sir. There is no such thing like darkness. It’s actually the absence of light.

Sir! We always study light & heat, but not cold & darkness.

Similarly, the evil does not exist. Actually it is the absence of Love, Faith & True belief in God.

The name of the student was...
Vivekananda...!!!

“Motivation is so important. In fact all human action can be seen in terms of movement, and the mover behind all actions is one’s motivation.  If you develop a pure and sincere motivation, if you are motivated by a wish to help on the basis of kindness, compassion, and respect, then you can carry on any kind of work, in any field, and function more effectively with less fear or worry, not being afraid of what others think or whether you ultimately will be successful in reaching your goal.  Even if you fail to achieve your goal, you can feel good about having made the effort.  But with a bad motivation, people can praise you or you can achieve goals, but you still will not be happy.”

CHAPTER 26: “The Science of Kriya Yoga”

The science of Kriya Yoga, mentioned so often in these pages, became widely known in modern India through the instrumentality of Lahiri Mahasaya, my guru’s guru. The Sanskrit root of Kriya is kri, to do, to act and react; the same root is found in the word karma, the natural principle of cause and effect. Kriya Yoga is thus “union (yoga) with the Infinite through a certain action or rite.” A yogi who faithfully follows its technique is gradually freed from karma or the universal chain of causation.
Because of certain ancient yogic injunctions, I cannot give a full explanation of Kriya Yoga in the pages of a book intended for the general public. The actual technique must be learned from a Kriyaban or Kriya Yogi; here a broad reference must suffice.

Kriya Yoga is a simple, psychophysiological method by which the human blood is decarbonized and recharged with oxygen. The atoms of this extra oxygen are transmuted into life current to rejuvenate the brain and spinal centers. By stopping the accumulation of venous blood, the yogi is able to lessen or prevent the decay of tissues; the advanced yogi transmutes his cells into pure energy. Elijah, Jesus, Kabir and other prophets were past masters in the use of Kriya or a similar technique, by which they caused their bodies to dematerialize at will.

Kriya is an ancient science. Lahiri Mahasaya received it from his guru, Babaji, who rediscovered and clarified the technique after it had been lost in the Dark Ages.

“The Kriya Yoga which I am giving to the world through you in this nineteenth century,” Babaji told Lahiri Mahasaya, “is a revival of the same science which Krishna gave, millenniums ago, to Arjuna, and which was later known to Patanjali, and to Christ, St. John, St. Paul, and other disciples.”
