Wayside Temples-8: "Sri Sivagurunathan Temple"

Kottaiyur Gurunathan Koil. I have never seen it open. It must have had its heyday, for I know many persons around this place, who have been named after the presiding deity: SIVAGURUNATHAN. Sivagurunathan, that is, Guru to Lord Shiva Himself, is Lord Muruga or Lord Karthikeya as he is known in the north. Many of you know the episode of Lord Muruga incarcerating Lord Brahma, the God of Creation, for not knowing the meaning of the 'Pranava Mantra'. Then Lord Shiva intervened and pretended that He Himself did not know it and asked for its meaning. Lord Muruga is said to have asked His father, for learning it he has to become his student, whereupon Lord Shiva Himself became a student of Lord Muruga. From then onwards, Lord Muruga is known as 'Thagappan Sami' or 'Sivagurunathan'.

Dear Surya! this is regdg your write up:Siva Gurunathan Temple. The truth is as follows:- Actual name is "Gurunathan temple". This is Jeeva Smathi temple of Saint Sri-la-sri Yoganandha Saraswathi Swamigal. He was from Paavanaasam, by birth from a very rich Anthanar family. Later went into spritual life and started to all Bharath yathra. On his way back from north he has come across our Kottaiyur (Chettinadu) and a got a divine call and started staying back here for period of two years in which lot of devotees/sisyas from this regions, in particular from Nagarathaar Comunity raised. In the year 1919, August 4th, on a "Visakam Day" he has attained into Jeeva Smaathi. As per his wish Nagarathaar of Kottaiyur established a jeeva Smaathi temple with a beautiful pool in front(oorani-drinking water). By side theres a Pillaiyar temple also. Every year Guru Pooja is being done in the Tamil month of Aadi-visaka nakshatra day by the tustees. Inside the the temple you will find a tiny beautiful Lingam on the top of the Smaathi with a Gurus clay statue. Also thereis an artistic Pnchaloka Sila for Great Guru AadhiSankara for which Abhisekam is being performed on the days of Gurupooja, Aarudra Darshnanam, Annaabhisekam in the month of Aiyppasi.
